Throughout his career as an Architect and appointed Cathedral Architect, James has built up a wealth of experience working with private and public-sector clients; often securing funding and leading large project teams to deliver a range of architectural, interior and property development projects.
Prior to forming Sanderson Borland, James was a Regional Partner at Purcell, one of the UK’s largest architectural practices, where he was responsible for the management of the practice’s northern offices; Edinburgh, Manchester and Liverpool.
Additionally, James was the Cathedral Architect at Blackburn Cathedral between 2001 and 2022. As well as overseeing the regular maintenance of the historic fabric of the Cathedral, this appointment has included the design and delivery of a £35m regeneration masterplan surrounding the Cathedral. As a result, James is regularly invited to speak at national conferences on major Cathedral development, sharing his experiences and skills.
As Director at Sanderson Borland, James continues his involvement with Blackburn Cathedral as well as overseeing the running of the practice and managing projects that utilise his expertise in historic buildings.
